Community Outreach

The Ark

A united ministry of Athens area religious organizations which combine their resources to carry out God's mandate to serve God's children in need. When a "neighbor" comes to The Ark in need, a volunteer counsels or listens and can make referrals to the community resources available. When appropriate, The Ark gives direct financial aid for housing, utilities, prescriptions or other necessities. For more information, contact the church office @ 706-548-2756.

Almost Home (Athens Area Homeless Shelter)

Meals on Wheels

By working with the Council on Aging, members of Covenant have the opportunity to help deliver hot meals to the homes of senior citizens. A special offering is taken during the Christmas Season to help financially support Meals on Wheels. More than 18 members help deliver these meals. In January the SOUPER BOWL donations of soup on Super Bowl Sunday are collected and given to the Meals on Wheels program. Financial contributions are given to Our Daily Bread. Hispanic Ministry

In collaboration with the Witness Ministry team and the Northeast Georgia Presbytery, Covenant's congregation is involved in responding to the spiritual and social needs of this rapidly growing segment of Athens. A Hispanic Developer has been "Called" for this outreach.  For more information, contact Jose Torres, Evangelist/Coordinator/ Advocate for this ministry (706-227-8948).

Interfaith Hospitality Network

The Interfaith Hospitality Network program enables local communities to unite their efforts to assist homeless families . The program mobilizes community resources: houses of worship for overnight lodging, congregations for volunteers, social service agencies for family assessment and referral, and existing facilities for day programs. The Network also employs a Director who provides assistance and advocacy to Network families as they seek housing, jobs, and other resources. Participation congregations furnish sleeping accommodations and a “hospitality room” where guests relax, socialize and do homework, or watch television. Guests arrive at the host congregation at 5:30 pm and remain overnight. The host congregation provides the evening meal, breakfast, and a bag lunch. In the morning, guests return to the day center. From there, children go to school and adult guests go to look for housing or work, or go to work. The IHN program provides homeless families with basic human needs: shelter, safety, and sustenance with a spirit of warmth and hospitality. Congregations become temporary homes in which families are treated as guests and individuals are accepted as they are. In this environment, guests are able to maintain their dignity. The kindness of hosts helps diminish the hurt of homelessness, and both volunteers and guests grow and learn from each other.  For more information, contact the church office @706-548-2756.

Campus Ministry

The aim of the Presbyterian Campus Ministry is to take advantage of the quick and easy ways that college students and those who serve in ministry with them can connect to share talents, energy, and resources.  Covenant Church provides leadership by serving on the governing board as well as  providing some monetary support.

Individual Service Committments

Many Covenant members serve Athens-Clarke County on an individual basis through community organizations and civic and environmental groups. Volunteers working for local hospitals, Recording for the Blind, Boys and Girls Club, Council on Aging, Mentor Program, Tutorial Program and others, although not officially part of Covenant's ministry, enrich the community. An ongoing part of nurture at Covenant is to equip and encourage members to serve God in and through their vocations.
